I couldn't tell you with any certainty whether speaking to him would have done any good. But once one is tasked with saving the world - by themselves or by others, it hardly matters in the end... Sometimes the means stop mattering, so much as one's end goal remains in sight.

I can't speak for him, and from what you've said I'm not certain I would want to. But seeing as he was willing to use a weapon to ensure his...lasting peace, or however he was trying to save everyone... I have to wonder if his rationale was similar to your own, with regards to killing people. If the world needed to be saved by purging those that no longer deserved to inherit it, to make a point to those that would continue to harm it. Do you know if that was the case...?
