Week 17.

WEEK 17

There are disturbances in Veilstone.

Although perhaps saying that there are disturbances in Veilstone is understating it; the first thing that's going to be immediately noticeable is the fact that there are few to no people outside of their residences. They're still there, they're definitely present in town, and it doesn't look like Team Galactic has done any mass recruitment recently; at the same time, they don't seem inclined to leave their homes unless their task is absolutely necessary.

The reasons why will soon become apparent, the longer you remain in the city; soft bursts of force will ripple across the city from time to time, and every time they do something shifts. The edges of buildings will suddenly decay, aging before your eyes into something that seems to have been abandoned for years; sometimes parts of the streets will vanish as you walk, turning into something hard and rocky, seemingly still untouched by human intervention. Occasionally the leaves will turn bright colors and drop off of the trees, only to regrow anew again almost immediately.

Perhaps most tellingly is the fact that your concept of the passage of time is no longer entirely halted - you're aware that time is certainly passing, though it's difficult to say in what direction. It's obvious now more than ever that time exists in a sort of fourth dimension, coming at the world from a different angle entirely to the more planar space that you're still not certain you're perceiving correctly; throughout all of this, the Team Galactic base remains sealed.

Whatever it is you're going to do about this, you might want to formulate a plan of some sort this week.

I'm also wondering how many people we're actually going to have to worry about. Not that I don't think they don't still have their little personal army in there, but they didn't do a damn thing about us when we were in there before.

[personal profile] discutio 2018-09-25 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt they had any idea what to make of us then, programming or otherwise. Besides that, we didn't exactly present much of a threat needing to be dealt with immediately.

...I don't even know if we're much of one now, honestly.

The Commanders never acted like they saw us as one. Guess we know why, after the entire Celestic Town shitshow.

[...]

You got any tips for going up against gods? In the event that we have to fuckin' subdue this thing. Closest experience I've got was dealing with a thing meant to wipe out humanity and the most I took away from that is "try not to die too much."
discutio: (gonna change you like a remix)

[Ignis laughed a little bitterly, taking his visor off and pressing a hand to his eyes.]

Even outright killing a god doesn't quite manage to do much of anything where we're from. The only way I can think of to defeat one is...well, with another. We needed Shiva to subdue Ifrit, and apart from that our conflicts with the Astrals were no more than tests of our strength and will.

...I don't know that there's anything we can do here if one actually tries to kill us, save for 'pray the guardians or Darkrai and Cresselia intervene'. Or at least hope that if Galactic can subdue them with force, the same holds true for us.

In short, 'attack, because I'm out of ideas.'

[That gets a sound out of him, anyway, but it isn't derisive.]

We had guns. Let me tell you, I have never felt so goddamn useless as I did trying to point a pistol at something bigger than this fucking building.

[...]

To be honest, I don't usually plan. I always just kind of figure we'll be okay because we don't have too much of a choice.
discutio: (that's dragging me down)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-09-25 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's a jarring feeling, to be sure. I've rarely been armed with more than a pair of knives, and at that point one might as well just be fighting with toothpicks for all the good it seems it'll do.

[He took a slow breath, putting his visor back into place.]

Strategy is the only thing I have right now, and for how much it keeps falling through as of late I don't think I'm of much use to any of you. We're likely to be noticed the instant we step foot in the base, if we haven't been already. From there everything's just liable to fall apart immediately.
bloodspent: (03. you made a vow)

[personal profile] bloodspent 2018-09-25 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
The most I do is kill shit. And that's not really all that useful around here, either, given how things tend to go. The great thing about these goddamn people is that they apparently don't require anybody to actually be useful, they just want you around. Not really something I'm used to, but not something worth complaining about, I guess.

Like... Don't get me wrong, Chelsea and Aya and Sena are great. But they're not gonna do much other than "die" in a serious situation.
discutio: (smile from a veil)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-09-25 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could disagree with that, but we both know that's precisely the case. I don't exactly ask for years of combat training, but so many children and civilians does not a formidable opponent make.
bloodspent: (07. they're all the same)

[personal profile] bloodspent 2018-09-25 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
We've got that problem, and also the part where so many of the people that aren't civilians are used to being able to do fuckin' magic and shit. Some people use it along with the combat, but then we've got Kayneth.

[...He likes all these people, he promises. It's just that he's not sure what the fuck we're supposed to do with them if something shows up and decides to try for a TPK.]
discutio: (gonna change you like a remix)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-09-25 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I admit I'm in that group myself. If I don't have magic on top of my tactics amounting to nothing, I'm afraid I'm just...useless. I'm not sure what can even be done here anymore.
bloodspent: (23. heavy as a feather)

[personal profile] bloodspent 2018-09-25 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, there's the Pokémon.

[So there's that.]

They're generally more capable of shit than we are, if it comes down to a fight. I just don't like the idea of sending 'em in unless I know they want to.
discutio: (did you exchange)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-09-25 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm of the same opinion. And I can't say I'm comfortable letting Hemera and the others fight a presumably losing battle against a god on my behalf.
bloodspent: (28. when you were there first)

[personal profile] bloodspent 2018-09-25 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm willing to leave that last part up to them. I can respect dying for something you want and think is worth it; I'm not okay with dying for someone else's orders. I spent enough time nearly doing that myself, I'm not going to shove that on them.
