Test 5.

VERITY

The journey this month has been easier on you in several ways; despite your losses, your numbers have been bolstered by the addition of two more this month, and unlike the unforgiving terrain on the way to Lake Acuity the routes to Lake Verity seem downright hospitable - they're straightforward, the climate is far more temperate, and there are patches of cheer visible here and there along the paths in the form of those brightly-colored flowers, even as you make your way toward the lakefront.

But the lakefront itself is perhaps unsettlingly silent; a reminder, perhaps, of what you're here to do, of the importance of your task.

You'll reach the lake sometime in the evening. The sun isn't down yet, but it looks as though it won't be too long before it dips below the horizon; there's more than enough light for you to see what the lake itself looks like, however - the water is still and clear, to an extent where you can see straight down to the bottom regardless of how deep it gets. There's no bridge or other way to cross over the lake that you can see, but once again there's a large rock formation rising out of the center of the lake and a good-sized opening in the stone, leading to what's likely a system of caverns further inside.

Your exploration starts here, next to the crystal clear waters of Lake Verity; what happens next is up to you.

[ Miphanus's ball is still held for a moment before he green eyes light up and, ] ... That's right! You're a research assistant, are you not? [ And she makes to put her backpack on the ground and whips out the journals on grass types that Kazuma stole borrowed. ] I have studied this extensively! And I have also taken my own field notes on all of the Pokémon we've encountered before now, and charted the development of my own companions! I am a scholar myself, and I would surely love to know more about your research - and to begin with, you might test me on my knowledge!

Does it have something to do with why our Pokemon are suddenly acting depressed?

[At this point, Nin seems to just give up on flying and land on Sena's head where Shell was resting before, as if to illustrate his point.]

He would be happy for your companionship anytime, I am sure, but I would hate to impose. Even then, I would invite you to come with us to the Guardian, if you would like, rather than just keep dear Duma busy. We cannot be certain what lies ahead, but we will keep you safe, I promise.

I truly do believe things are going to be all right. I would like for you to see it so alongside us.

Could you elaborate? It might give me an idea for what we can do to show you we're ready.

[Since she imagines that would be part of what they need to prove here, among other factors.]

[That gets Atsushi to pause.]

...you dont have to battle? That seems to be what most people do...or used to do, I guess. Otherwise your Pokemon wouldn't get stronger, would they?
enjoymyatelier: dude i am running out of variations on smug (all smug all the time)

I did enjoy battling Maylene even though I was completely and utterly defeated, so I'd be happy to take you up on that.

Um...does it really need to be broken to pass through it?

[Sena, what are you getting at.

Maybe Rin might pick up on what he's suggesting, since she was all excited about the potential for it before. The answer's right in front of her, after all.]

I've found it quite fun, really; most of what my own partners have done is simply gone against wild Pokemon in droves, but it's certainly a good way to bring out their strengths and allow them to be refined so beautifully...

[...she goes slightly dreamy when she says that much, though she's back to reality after a moment--]

...Make no mistake, however; it's quite wonderful that even those without a taste for battle have their own place in this world that they can carve out for themselves. That the only way forward isn't simply to fight ravenously.

[It's enviable, really, but she doesn't say that much.]
hyruglyphics: (or something like that)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-08-24 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
They are! There's three journals, covering details on every grass type in the region - habits, capabilities, environment... and then there's also a book extensively detailing ghost types as well, and how to avoid conflict with them.

[ She beams, stacking all four there! As well as her own personal journals.

... She's on volume 2 of her own journals. ]
enjoymyatelier: maybe he should check the foundations, come to think of it. (red car. good point.)

[personal profile] enjoymyatelier 2018-08-24 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I've always found your strategies very interesting, so I think it's worth a shot.

[...he would not have expected to be saying that, but like....]
enjoymyatelier: no seriously what are you doing (uhhhhhhhh....)

[personal profile] enjoymyatelier 2018-08-24 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that's right. Well, I suppose it's prudent to ask them first, all things considered.

Huh...

[Atsushi looks down at Chazuke, who still has his face pressed against his arms.]

...I'll remember that, Lucas-kun. I like helping my Pokemon get stronger, but it's nice knowing you can get closer to them in other ways, too.

[Everything in moderation and all that!]

I am willing to battle you.

[She had returned her 'mons to their pokeballs when they entered the cave, but now she calls forth Gible.]

We've trained and battled amongst ourselves, but I've yet to engage a native of this world in a friendly spar.
heritrix: (could it be?)

[personal profile] heritrix 2018-08-24 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A barrier...

[That's very interesting to her. Back in her world, she knows how to create barrier-like spells herself, so this gives her a few ideas.]

All three of the Lake Guardians are powerful Psychic-type pokemon, yes? I imagine your conclusion is the correct one. The barrier is probably Mesprit's own doing, as a means to protect itself. But nothing negative happens to you when you get close to it?
