Week 2.

WEEK 2.

The new week begins with new surroundings.

The city you've been growing accustomed to over the past week is now well behind you as you set out on your journey proper; the terrain still seems rocky and steep here as you move downhill and to the south, dotted here and there with small ponds to the east and rocky outcroppings that you can climb on to the west. There are also large expanses of tall grass here, and the entire route is flanked with tall trees leading off into the forest a short ways. You're more than welcome to explore; just don't stray too far from the group - you wouldn't want to be left behind out here, for any reason.

Wild Pokémon are abundant here, as anyone venturing into the tall grass will discover; they aren't inclined to attack you, however, simply watching with dull, dead eyes as you stumble through the area they've come to call home. The trip is difficult, and it's a lot of walking, but it's not unmanageable; fortunately enough, the route you're on should lead you directly to Valor Lakefront, assuming there are no complications along the way.

From Thursday and beyond, the route takes a sharp turn west; in front of you lies what's clearly the ocean, large rocks jutting out just offshore tempering the waves. It's safe to go in the water if you so choose - assuming you can swim, that is - and the forested terrain has given way to a large beach with patches of tall grass here and there.

Interestingly, there's a house located on the beach; whether it's inhabited or not is difficult to tell. Of course, exploring slightly north of the beach will reveal a path. Maybe it leads somewhere important...

CURRENT LOCATION: ROUTE 213
POKEMON AVAILABLE: NEAR WATER

SUNDAY | MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY | FRIDAY
[OOC: Welcome to week two of Azume; feel free to make as many top levels as you'd like and tag out to other characters! This post is for all of your interactions this week... at least until the weekend. Don't forget that a write-up is due next weekend!]

Yeah, I'm mostly used to those too. We've got some insect-like monsters, though.

This guy's pretty big - almost person-sized, actually.

Person-sized?!

[You know what, maybe she doesn't need to see it-]

How did you even manage to catch it?!

Yeah! It's about... this tall.

[He'll hold a hand up to indicate around 5' tall.]

It was actually pretty easy? You just have your partner smack 'em a few times and then you toss one of these balls at them.

[He'll hold up the Pokéball in explanation.]

I've got a book somewhere in my bag that talks about it, if you want to borrow it.

Oh, I....

[...you know, Rey had skimmed the book Zelda had given her about Pokemon battling, but hadn't really read all that much about catching. She'd had the foresight to buy a collection of Pokeballs regardless, but...]

...I suppose I should do that to Riolu, shouldn't I? Although, I think I can skip the battling part.

[...right. Let her just. grab a Pokeball out of her bag, and awkwardly hold it out at the (her??) Riolu.]

Do you know what this is-

[Apparently it does know what that is, because as soon as Rey holds out the Pokeball, the Riolu walks up and whacks it with its paw - not hard enough to knock it out of her hand, but enough to cause it to activate. With a flash, the little blue Pokemon disappears, and Rey is left holding the Pokeball with a stunned expression on her face.

Gotcha! RIOLU was caught!

...well. That worked.]

...is that how it went for you?

[Yuri watches all of that curiously, and when Rey asks he shakes his head.]

Not at all. I think I like your method better, though. It looks like the little guy really likes you!

['Likes' her? ...hm.]

I don't know about that; he - I'm just going to call it a 'he' - hasn't changed his facial expression all day. Even once I'd pulled him from the pond, as soon as he had air again he just...stopped reacting to anything. Even that felt like he was just doing it because I held the ball at him.

[Frowning, Rey places the now-occupied Pokeball gently in her lap.]

Have your Pokemon...shown anything? Any sort of emotion?

I kinda doubt he'd go for the ball unless he wanted to be with you. So maybe it's not a huge emotional reaction, but I think you two have a bond already.

[At that, though... Hmm. Yuri considers for a moment before shaking his head.]

Not really. The most I've seen that stands out is that Roc seems to get really into battling? But I'm not sure if that's just something she's doing or if all of them do that.

[...hmm. That's interesting. Running her thumbs over the smooth, metallic surface of Riolu's pokeball, Rey ponders Yuri's comments.]

Maybe their reactions are linked to more basic urges, rather than higher-level emotions - perhaps Riolu decided to come with me because I offered safety when he was vulnerable, and your Roc is a powerful fighter because she knows, instinctively, that the loser never leaves the battlefield in very good shape. Both scenarios are driven by self-preservation, and I wouldn't consider that an emotion. Even the most simple of creatures possess it - the desire to stay alive.

That's an interesting thought. I hadn't considered it like that... but that could certainly explain it. I wonder if the others have had experiences like that with their partners?

It's amazing what people are capable of when all that matters is survival.

[Not that she's speaking from experience, or anything.]

Has anyone told you about any such behaviour from their Pokemon?

I haven't heard anything like that from anyone else, but I'm curious now. I'll have to ask around.
