Week 5.

WEEK 5

As of morning the next day, it seems the rain has stopped; with Azelf awakened and your newly-hatched companions by your side, it's possible that you're feeling a new sense of resolve regarding what needs to be done - and, perhaps more importantly, your ability to accomplish it.

The device Maylene gave you certainly does seem to work; activating it will reveal a dark portal crackling with energy, shades of pink and purple swirling brightly around the outer edges, and those of you that walk through it will find yourselves quite suddenly standing somewhere else - there's grass beneath your feet and an unfamiliar city to the west, and the place you're standing seems raised up in some way; turning around once the portal has closed behind the last of you will reveal a massive bronze statue depicting a Pokémon of some sort, though what it is seems to be a little difficult to tell...

The trip to Eterna City may leave you feeling a little dizzy and disoriented, and for a few uncomfortable moments you're likely very, very aware of your organs, but the effects will pass after a few moments and you'll soon feel right as rain.

Of course, it'll likely become obvious very quickly that you aren't alone near that statue...

Either way, it's a long journey up to Snowpoint City; you might want to take some time to make sure that you're prepared before you set off. It really does seem as though finding Azelf at Lake Valor has done the world some good, though, along with your combined effects on the world already; hopefully the Guardian at Lake Acuity in the north will be just as helpful...

[Ignis concentrated on that in silence for a moment, mentally drawing up a chart of his own as Zelda spoke and committing it to memory. That sounded like something he could work with, definitely. Not much use against Maylene in particular, but no defense was perfect.]

I think I’ve a fair grasp on that much. Being completely immune to an entire type sounds useful.
hyruglyphics: (I mean some look okay?)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! There aren't very many immunities, actually.

[ Going on her chart again, she's clearly tracing it with her finger, ]

Normal types and Ghost types are both immune to each other. And in addition Ghost types are immune to Fighting. Ground types are immune to Electric, and Flying is immune to Ground. I already mentioned Dark... And then Steel types are immune to Poison.
discutio: (dance alone to the beat of your heart)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Another deeply thoughtful pause--a few more mental lines drawn in the chart, carefully.]

I think I can remember that, but I may need you to remind me later just to be sure.
hyruglyphics: (PM me if you don't want me)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I need to keep consulting this chart myself.

[ Sheepishly. ]

... Shall I go to Psychic's? Or perhaps you might guess.
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you've mentioned their disadvantage to Dark and we spoke of their advantage to Fighting...I'm not sure I can think of much else, does it resist itself as well?
hyruglyphics: (to be using them)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct on all accounts, actually - and it also resists Fighting. Though it does not resist the other it is effective against: Poison. In addition to Dark though, it is weak to Bug and Ghost. And Steel can resist it.
discutio: (dance alone to the beat of your heart)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm...that's a peculiar sort of logic. This may take more getting used to than I estimated.
hyruglyphics: (I mean some look okay?)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't understood it all too... if I had to guess for the weaknesses, it may have to do with ghosts, the dark, and bugs being common enough fears, to poison the mind? But I cannot guess to the reasoning of those advantages.

[ ... Poison the mind and it beats poison. Heh. ]
discutio: (setting fire to the sky)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, you might be on to something with that. Mnemonics are fairly useful in remembering complex things like this, mysterious reasoning aside.
hyruglyphics: (Pew Pew)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That one was accidental but... yes, you're right, that might be a good idea.

[ Heh. ]
discutio: (so we can take the world back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Accidental cleverness is still cleverness all the same.
hyruglyphics: (I mean mostly I)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ . . . Nod! ]

In the case of Pokemon with two types, those can change each other too. For example, Flying types resist fighting, which normal is weak to. So it evens out to just be neutral damage.

[ I mean she says that but she's going to get... some of that cheesecake... in her mouth. ]
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Good for you, Zelda, because this tiny cheesecake is some five-star shit, like oh my god did Shiva herself descend from on high and bless this specific caked cheese and berries with her beautifully manicured hands or something.]

This is far more complex than the sorts of resistances we've usually dealt with...Well, no matter. It'll simply take a while to memorize, it's hardly impossible.

hyruglyphics: (to be using them)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It is enormously more complex than Hyrule's, to be sure. The only elements encountered with monsters or worked into potions are electricity, ice, fire... I suppose the Guardians have their own unique energy.
discutio: (we are the jack-o-lanterns in july)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Our basic magic amounts to the same three elements, actually. It's quite straightforward, so evaluating a given creature's weakness is a matter of either basic trial and error or just observing them. Plant-based creatures like treants and malboros are weak to fire, for the most obvious example. Often aquatic or amphibious creatures are susceptible to ice, and lightning tends to work most effectively on battlemechs and other machinery.
hyruglyphics: (to be using them)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I would not say that ... Well, I suppose the elements do have their alignments like that, but the only thing where it's truly antithetical to each other are fire and ice based creature cancel each other out. One blue with a frost empowered weapon will slay a fire breathing Lizalfo for example.
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
...Well, that's certainly effective. It's rare that just one cast would eliminate a target, usually it's a bit more difficult than that.
hyruglyphics: (idk man)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said, that is only really for the opposite properties of fire and ice. ... I suppose shock can give most creatures pause, though.
discutio: (and i'll burn you to the ground)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-04 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I find it usually does, yes.
hyruglyphics: (so like I'll get some better)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-04 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Especially the bird, by the way.

[ This thing on her head ] As a Flying type, it is weak to Electric and Rock.
discutio: (we are the jack-o-lanterns in july)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-04 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Highwind appreciates this comfortable perch.]

That sounds easy enough to remember.
hyruglyphics: (to be using them)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-04 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and Ice as well, now I look at this. [ Hmm! ]

From the normal typing, it does have an immunity to ghost, though its normal moves also can't harm ghosts... And it both resists and is effective against Bug, Grass, and Fighting - ... though Fighting neutrals out, as I said. [ From the Normal Type ]

Electric and Rock both resist it, though not Ice - but Steel resists it as well.

[ A beat. ]

... Steel resists a lot.
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-04 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Another thoughtful pause, and Ignis was sort of regretting not being able to have this all written down. Well, no reason he had to memorize the whole thing in one day.]

Stands to reason, I think. Metal's hardly known for being weak or breakable.
hyruglyphics: (more expressive!)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-04 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, it just... it is a little funny to keep needing to mention that Steel resists it as well.
discutio: (and i'll burn you to the ground)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-04 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in that case why don't you tell me what it doesn't resist? Surely there's something, right?

(no subject)
