Week 1.

WEEK 1. As Cynthia had promised, the sun does indeed rise the next morning. Whether you slept or not (and sleeping inside the Pokémon Center you were in before seems totally fine by the attendant), it seems Cynthia kept her word; she left sometime shortly before sunrise, and you haven't been bothered by Team Galactic and those that work for it in the interim. It isn't advisable to return to the headquarters building, however. At least not for the time being. However, a new day does dawn, and with it comes the knowledge that you're in an unfamiliar city, completely on your own. There are several things to be done before you can leave: gathering supplies and provisions, finding maps, obtaining new clothes... Of course, your new "companions" are still with you, and they don't seem willing to leave your side; they'll follow you dutifully, but they still seem...wrong, horribly so, and it doesn't seem to be wearing off. Maybe if you work with them a little...? Try to talk to them, train them, teach them to do things... Who knows? It might do them some good. Do you find some sort of problem with them?

No, not really. I always thought having a real animal sounded irritating, but they're not in any condition to even be that.

It's just another thing to deal with while we're here, you know? It's not like I'm going to take her home with me, I'm just carting her around to all these lakes.

[discutio]

Perhaps not. Even knowing that, I think they can only stand to benefit from the companionship. If any of us hope to help this world no matter how incrementally on our way back, then it seems as good an idea as any to start small.

[eudaimonikos]

[Michael's quiet for a moment, considering this.]

Do you think that would actually help?

[discutio]

I don't know. But I think it's worth a try. Besides...we could use all the help we can get if things are more complicated than a simple journey to these lake guardians, which I suspect it will be.

[A simple road trip was never just a simple road trip.]

[eudaimonikos]

[Michael makes a thoughtful noise.]

We don't have any real animals where I'm from. All constructs. They're just another type of tool, in the end. Excuse me - could you heal this?

[Nurse Joy mumbles something probably, that's actually what he was here for in the first place.]

What are you doing to try and fix them?

[discutio]

Constructs...?

[He gestured in the Absol's direction, canine stepping closer and the Chingling hopping halfheartedly into his waiting hand with a slight jingle.]

The only thing any of us can do with our limited understanding. Offer companionship if they approach. I find talking to Hemera preferable to simply keeping my thoughts to myself--blank as they may be, they do listen well enoguh.

Oh, you've named it?

[There's a Pokeball-sound as he gets the Purrloin's ball back and lets it out again.]

I just got back from having her battle one of the other ones. Pretty underwhelming, to be honest.

[discutio]

The first one, yes. I've yet to think of what to call this little one. [The bell Pokemon sat quietly in his hand, only about six inches tall.] I don't know--I'd like to believe mere companionship can help, but the only way to find out is through the attempt.

[eudaimonikos]

I see your point, but that's not really a solution you can scale up easily. Fixing this on the macro level is still gonna have to involve dealing with Cyrus and his whole...whatever he did.

[Sigh]

I hate this whole thing. So much.

[discutio]

Obviously so, yes. One can't hope to cure a widespread ailment by treating individual symptoms, but doing the latter in the process of the former may yet prove worthwhile.

In other words, there's no reason not to try in the meantime, since we're hardly going to find and deal with Cyrus immediately.

[eudaimonikos]

If we deal with him at all.

Would you stay to do that, even if we found a way home? I know some people want to.

[discutio]

I have to go back. Much as this world has my sympathy and I'll certainly not convince anyone to abandon it if they choose to stay, that point is non-negotiable for my part.

[eudaimonikos]

[Michael makes a vindicated sort of hand motion, realizes that Ignis can't see it, and lets the whole thing drop.]

Yes! That's exactly how I feel! My friends are in a bit of a situation back home, and I really need to get back and oversee things - so it's fine to leave, right? Not some kind of grand moral failing?

[discutio]

While I'm far from against helping repair whatever damage was done here, my own world takes priority. I'd be stunned if all the others thought otherwise, I didn't exactly think it a moral quandary.

It just seems like something Chidi would do. My friend Chidi, he’s a moral philosophy professor. Real big on right and wrong. I don’t want to end up upsetting everybody when I do get back, and I can’t just lie to them about it.

[look, his humans are gone and he’s the devil, he’s trying to get some kind of baseline to work with here.]
