Week 1.

WEEK 1.

As Cynthia had promised, the sun does indeed rise the next morning.

Whether you slept or not (and sleeping inside the Pokémon Center you were in before seems totally fine by the attendant), it seems Cynthia kept her word; she left sometime shortly before sunrise, and you haven't been bothered by Team Galactic and those that work for it in the interim.

It isn't advisable to return to the headquarters building, however. At least not for the time being.

However, a new day does dawn, and with it comes the knowledge that you're in an unfamiliar city, completely on your own. There are several things to be done before you can leave: gathering supplies and provisions, finding maps, obtaining new clothes...

Of course, your new "companions" are still with you, and they don't seem willing to leave your side; they'll follow you dutifully, but they still seem...wrong, horribly so, and it doesn't seem to be wearing off. Maybe if you work with them a little...? Try to talk to them, train them, teach them to do things... Who knows? It might do them some good.

CURRENT LOCATION: VEILSTONE CITY
POKEMON AVAILABLE: WITHIN CITIES

MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY | FRIDAY
[OOC: Welcome to week one of Azume; feel free to make as many top levels as you'd like and tag out to other characters! This post is for all of your interactions this week... at least until the weekend. Don't forget that a write-up is due this weekend!

Feel free to investigate the city as you see fit this week; we ask only that you try to stagger investigations and be mindful of what's already been checked. If you wish to investigate, notify the mods in your comment subject for your top-level and we'll get on it as soon as possible!]

kininaru: (they wouldn't be flaccid)

berries;

Ah, I would certainly love to try! They do look quite tasty, if you wouldn't mind...

[ She does have a rather discerning palate; Chitanda's senses are, for the most part, sharper than average, especially when it comes to determining the quality of food. The berries hardly seem dangerous, either, according to some of the reading material she's gathered--

But it's...hrm. How to describe it... ]

Well, the texture is intriguing, I think. They're quite firm, firmer than an average berry by a long stretch...but even so, it's not smooth, either...

[ She covers her mouth while she chews, careful not to be rude...she runs over the flavors in her mouth, letting them sit for a bit before she finally swallows and-- ]

Sweet like a strawberry, sour like an elderberry, a bit salty, and bitter like a chokeberry...and there's umami, too! With a hint of spice, as well...ah, and also, there's a bit of astringency to it, like a cranberry? It isn't as though they're cancelling each other out, because they're all coexisting, but, none are overpowering any of the others. The aroma doesn't complement any one flavor, either...

[ These are a bit of an enigma. There's everything there, but because it's activating all of those flavors, her mouth just tastes like she's eating five things at once-- ]

They're...well, they certainly seem versatile!
hyruglyphics: (more expressive!)

[ See, see, you feel her girl! She's not sure she's familiar with all the fruits that Eru listed, but that's precisely where he mind was going. It's a mix of numerous things at once without having some sort of like... set existence. It's a real enigma! ]

They are, but now I wonder how would be best to cook with them! Having so much variety of flavor is a strength, but it also would make it more complicated as an ingredient paired with other things, wouldn't it? ... And they are quite large for berries as well.

[ Even if the book claims they are. She's not examined them for seeds yet.

... Actually she should do that. she's going to cut one open to do that, getting some oran juice on the table. ]
kininaru: (they just started swordfighting)

[personal profile] kininaru 2018-06-08 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[ You go, girl, gut that fruit-- ]

It probably wouldn't be complementing anything on its own, you're right. It would be adding far too many other flavors into a mix, I would think...but rather, instead of using it to complement another food, perhaps other foods can be used to complement it? If you were to make some kind of dessert with them, you would probably want to bring out its sweetness, but perhaps you could bring out its tartness as well, or its crispness, depending on what you're trying to make...

[ It does seem peculiar. She can't say she's ever had a berry with natural umami... ]
hyruglyphics: (but will I fix all the)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-06-08 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... there is a seed within here...

[ Presumably, because you can grow another from one of the berries. that said, as she's rummaging around there with his fingers, she seems thoughtful. ]

Yes, that's true... I wonder what sort of pastry you could make with them...
kininaru: (they were like "haha it's funny right?")

[personal profile] kininaru 2018-06-11 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If it were up to me, I would make a parfait! I'm sure it'd pair well with a yogurt, or some kind of cream cheese...

[ The acidity would help bring out some of its more berry-like qualities... ]

I wonder how long it would take to plant them? They might be useful on the road...
hyruglyphics: (where my smiles at)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-06-11 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
We shall have to experiment! I do not know if these will work domesticated, but perhaps I can try one potted and one in the ground itself!

[ And she can compare results! Maybe a few controls... ]

I wonder if you could make a fruit cake with it...
kininaru: (yeah they had this club)

[personal profile] kininaru 2018-06-11 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
A cake would be interesting, too...but I think you would have to choose other fruits that wouldn't clash too hard with the savory sort of flavors. I think experimenting might be good! We'll have to use a variety, I think...

Though speaking of planting, I'm also curious whether this was made naturally, or if there's some kind of cross-breeding technique involved in combining all of these flavors...perhaps there are other berries similar to this one that are a bit more, well, focused? I'm sure it's worth a try to plant them with others...
hyruglyphics: (Frogs!!)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-06-11 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh, right? she was a farmer's daughter! She nods to herself and she offers, ]

Would there be a way to tell if it were a cross breed? I have no doubt there are other berries around with differing flavors regardless.
