WEEK 4 Backtracking may not seem like an ideal situation, especially not given the situation on Sunday morning, but it isn't without reason or merit; after all, Lake Valor is within a reasonable distance, and perhaps more importantly, there's reason to believe that something may be there. Whether it's one of the Guardians you seek or something else entirely has yet to be seen; there's only one way to know for sure, however. So back onto Route 213 it is; you should reach Route 214 by Tuesday afternoon, and the entrance to Lake Valor by Thursday night; you may want to wait to explore the lakefront proper during the morning, however. Who knows what you may run into... You've seen at least some reasons to not give up hope as you left Pastoria; for the time being, let that hope give you strength. [Bucky can't spend all afternoon working out, so eventually he approaches to see what Jake is up to, head tipped curiously.]

That's a lot flashier than anything I'd do.

[His tone is curious, not condescending.]

I was always trained to err on the side of efficiency.

[Whether he's talking about the Army or HYDRA isn't entirely clear.]

As long as it gets the job done, it doesn't matter too much to me. If we're gonna be purely practical, though, let's say I fight a lot of things where you don't want to be all up in their face for too long.

[So it's for the sake of distancing as well as just being kind of flamboyant. Mostly the latter, but the former is pretty important.]

Sniper work no use, I take it?

It depends on what's going on. I've gotten help from one once or twice. Usually I'm dealing with huge numbers and not a lot of time.

[He can't really imagine what Jake usually fights, but he's been outnumber before on multiple occasions.]

Sounds like a reason to pack a lot of firepower.

[I mean, not that he needs a lot of weapons when his left arm can punch a hole in concrete.

There's a reason he doesn't wear it normally.]

[He laughs a bit at that, honestly.]

Don't get me wrong, I like my guns, but they're not always the most reliable. And I don't do blades.

[Okay that just raises more questions. He's not going to comment on the blade thing for obvious reasons, but:]

What kind of weapons do you use?

Usually hand-to-hand is enough. I'm more resilient than people would think. But if all else fails, bombs get the job done pretty well.

Bombs are very good at getting the job done.

Haven't ever used those before.

[World War II and all.]

I had a buddy with me in my unit. Didn't speak a word of English, but he knew more about dynamite than any man ever should. He was able to get shit done.

I believe it. Guys like that are great people to have around; I've worked with a few, the ones that just really like watching the fucking fireworks go off. Great at their jobs, not too bad to get drinks with either if you can get them to leave whatever hole they crawl into once the job's done.

Dernier might have been like that, but Jones, another member, spoke French. Came in handy.

I can imagine. Never had the pleasure of working with the French guys, though I've done jobs all over. Just a matter of assignments.

Usually, I worked alone. I was the one watching the rest of the group's backs.

I never really had a set job. Just did whatever it was I was told to do, and tried not to get my ass handed to me along the way.
