Week 5.

WEEK 5

As of morning the next day, it seems the rain has stopped; with Azelf awakened and your newly-hatched companions by your side, it's possible that you're feeling a new sense of resolve regarding what needs to be done - and, perhaps more importantly, your ability to accomplish it.

The device Maylene gave you certainly does seem to work; activating it will reveal a dark portal crackling with energy, shades of pink and purple swirling brightly around the outer edges, and those of you that walk through it will find yourselves quite suddenly standing somewhere else - there's grass beneath your feet and an unfamiliar city to the west, and the place you're standing seems raised up in some way; turning around once the portal has closed behind the last of you will reveal a massive bronze statue depicting a Pokémon of some sort, though what it is seems to be a little difficult to tell...

The trip to Eterna City may leave you feeling a little dizzy and disoriented, and for a few uncomfortable moments you're likely very, very aware of your organs, but the effects will pass after a few moments and you'll soon feel right as rain.

Of course, it'll likely become obvious very quickly that you aren't alone near that statue...

Either way, it's a long journey up to Snowpoint City; you might want to take some time to make sure that you're prepared before you set off. It really does seem as though finding Azelf at Lake Valor has done the world some good, though, along with your combined effects on the world already; hopefully the Guardian at Lake Acuity in the north will be just as helpful...

CURRENT LOCATION: ETERNA CITY
POKEMON AVAILABLE: WITHIN CITIES

discutio: (we are the jack-o-lanterns in july)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
I've been able to find out the most basic information--I know Hemera is Dark, and Highwind being Flying did make the most sense. I'm not quite sure how Sonantis is a Psychic type, but that matches with what I've heard.

[He tilted his head slightly in Zelda's direction, waiting patiently.]

Take your time, you've already been quite helpful.
hyruglyphics: (weeee)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Dark...? Yes, that would make sense... It actually goes with Kayneth's theory of colors aligning with typing...

[ Hmmm! ] In that regard, Highwind is probably Normal and Flying, like the Starlys around in the wild. Unlike a lot of types, I've yet to come across a pure flying type in any book so far. [ So she says flip, flip... Ah! ]

Oh, here we are, yes! those cloud like wings, it's a Swablu! Normal-Flying, like I said. ... Though I suppose the wings are actually supposedly closer to cotton than cloud -- Ah. Would you mind if I touched Highwind?
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, visual indicators, isn't that just my luck. [But...that really didn't seem to do much to dampen the mood he was in.]

No, not at all. [He held out a hand as if to beckon them over; while Hemera came right over to him, Highwind floated right past and perched on Zelda's head.]

[. . .]

He's doing it again, isn't he.
hyruglyphics: (for me!!)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh!

[ . . . Not as expected. Uh? She shifts in her seat so as to not unbalance him. At least he's light?

... But she reaches up to feel- ]

Ah, they do feel like cotton!

[ Err- ] ... Again? - But- Well, the colors is mostly Kayneth's theory, but it does have some merit. He's theorized that as a glance, color of Pokemon can help determine type. Water types do tend towards blue, and Normal types tend towards pinks or whites, dark types tend to have... well, darker colors.
discutio: (setting fire to the sky)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He rather likes to sit on my head. Apparently it's some sort of habit of the species, I think? I'm not certain.

[A sigh.]

Well, that's fine. A fair amount of the creatures back home look as if they're weak to something in particular, so I can adjust well enough.
hyruglyphics: (but will I fix all the)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's kind of cute?

[ She should look into that more, but she giggles and...

...

... She wants to eat the cheesecake. ...

But okay! ]

-Anyway, so that's Dark, Normal-Flying, Psychic... and then the last one is likely Bug, but maybe Fire as well?
discutio: (setting fire to the sky)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think so. [He leaned over to pick up the apathetic bug, giving her a gentle headpat as he did.] Suitably enough, perhaps.
hyruglyphics: (might be an idea)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So do you know any of those advantages or disadvantages? Or ought I go down them all?

[ She did open to her little chart thing in this book. This is such a hard chart. ]
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Rey told me that Maylene’s Fighting types held an advantage over Dark and disadvantage to Psychic, and I can make a few fair guesses—Fire’s liable to be susceptible to something like Noct’s fish Pokemon if they’re Water type, for example. Right?
Edited (suddenly not sure who has a fish lmao ) 2018-07-03 15:33 (UTC)
hyruglyphics: (to be using them)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She nods! ]

That's correct, yes. Actually, perhaps it's best to start with Dark - [ Okay, scrolling down the list here... ] Dark has some additional factors, but the main thing to note is that they are strong against both Psychic and Ghost types... actually, particularly Psychic. Psychic attacks can't harm them at all. However, they are weak against Bug and Fighting types.

[ . . . She realizes after saying it, Ignis did say as a strategist. ... So she rounds out with, ]

They also do reduced damage to steel types, [ according to gen4 ] and to be technical while they are weak to both Bug and Fighting, only Fighting resists their damage. They also do reduced damage to their own type.
discutio: (Default)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ignis concentrated on that in silence for a moment, mentally drawing up a chart of his own as Zelda spoke and committing it to memory. That sounded like something he could work with, definitely. Not much use against Maylene in particular, but no defense was perfect.]

I think I’ve a fair grasp on that much. Being completely immune to an entire type sounds useful.
hyruglyphics: (I mean some look okay?)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! There aren't very many immunities, actually.

[ Going on her chart again, she's clearly tracing it with her finger, ]

Normal types and Ghost types are both immune to each other. And in addition Ghost types are immune to Fighting. Ground types are immune to Electric, and Flying is immune to Ground. I already mentioned Dark... And then Steel types are immune to Poison.
discutio: (dance alone to the beat of your heart)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Another deeply thoughtful pause--a few more mental lines drawn in the chart, carefully.]

I think I can remember that, but I may need you to remind me later just to be sure.
hyruglyphics: (PM me if you don't want me)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I need to keep consulting this chart myself.

[ Sheepishly. ]

... Shall I go to Psychic's? Or perhaps you might guess.
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you've mentioned their disadvantage to Dark and we spoke of their advantage to Fighting...I'm not sure I can think of much else, does it resist itself as well?
hyruglyphics: (to be using them)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct on all accounts, actually - and it also resists Fighting. Though it does not resist the other it is effective against: Poison. In addition to Dark though, it is weak to Bug and Ghost. And Steel can resist it.
discutio: (dance alone to the beat of your heart)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm...that's a peculiar sort of logic. This may take more getting used to than I estimated.
hyruglyphics: (I mean some look okay?)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't understood it all too... if I had to guess for the weaknesses, it may have to do with ghosts, the dark, and bugs being common enough fears, to poison the mind? But I cannot guess to the reasoning of those advantages.

[ ... Poison the mind and it beats poison. Heh. ]
discutio: (setting fire to the sky)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, you might be on to something with that. Mnemonics are fairly useful in remembering complex things like this, mysterious reasoning aside.
hyruglyphics: (Pew Pew)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That one was accidental but... yes, you're right, that might be a good idea.

[ Heh. ]
discutio: (so we can take the world back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Accidental cleverness is still cleverness all the same.
hyruglyphics: (I mean mostly I)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ . . . Nod! ]

In the case of Pokemon with two types, those can change each other too. For example, Flying types resist fighting, which normal is weak to. So it evens out to just be neutral damage.

[ I mean she says that but she's going to get... some of that cheesecake... in her mouth. ]
discutio: (one maniac at a time we'll take it back)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Good for you, Zelda, because this tiny cheesecake is some five-star shit, like oh my god did Shiva herself descend from on high and bless this specific caked cheese and berries with her beautifully manicured hands or something.]

This is far more complex than the sorts of resistances we've usually dealt with...Well, no matter. It'll simply take a while to memorize, it's hardly impossible.

hyruglyphics: (to be using them)

[personal profile] hyruglyphics 2018-07-03 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It is enormously more complex than Hyrule's, to be sure. The only elements encountered with monsters or worked into potions are electricity, ice, fire... I suppose the Guardians have their own unique energy.
discutio: (we are the jack-o-lanterns in july)

[personal profile] discutio 2018-07-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Our basic magic amounts to the same three elements, actually. It's quite straightforward, so evaluating a given creature's weakness is a matter of either basic trial and error or just observing them. Plant-based creatures like treants and malboros are weak to fire, for the most obvious example. Often aquatic or amphibious creatures are susceptible to ice, and lightning tends to work most effectively on battlemechs and other machinery.
