azume | Week 1.

WEEK 1.

As Cynthia had promised, the sun does indeed rise the next morning.

Whether you slept or not (and sleeping inside the Pokémon Center you were in before seems totally fine by the attendant), it seems Cynthia kept her word; she left sometime shortly before sunrise, and you haven't been bothered by Team Galactic and those that work for it in the interim.

It isn't advisable to return to the headquarters building, however. At least not for the time being.

However, a new day does dawn, and with it comes the knowledge that you're in an unfamiliar city, completely on your own. There are several things to be done before you can leave: gathering supplies and provisions, finding maps, obtaining new clothes...

Of course, your new "companions" are still with you, and they don't seem willing to leave your side; they'll follow you dutifully, but they still seem...wrong, horribly so, and it doesn't seem to be wearing off. Maybe if you work with them a little...? Try to talk to them, train them, teach them to do things... Who knows? It might do them some good.

Could be from before. There doesn't seem like any reason for them to have them now - no reason for us to be given them.

Yeah, I'm confused by that too. I guess it works out well for us in the end, but it kinda puts me on edge.

At least they don't seem capable of reporting back to anyone about us. Though they could have tracking chips embedded...

[Doubtful glance at Purrloin.]

[He can guess what they are based on the name, but the concept's definitely new.]

That's definitely something we'll have to look out for. I'm surprised they just let us leave, but I guess they're not really capable of caring all that much...

One of those people outside the room we woke up in could have. I assume that was the Commander. They were talking about something or someone being gone...

[And then they left. Some kind of distraction, maybe? Or just lucky timing?]

Yeah. It'd probably make sense to let the Commander keep their emotions and all that. It'd be pretty hard to issue orders if you're just like everyone else here.

They must be some very interesting people, to accept living in a place like this without even being the almighty god-king of it.

[Vague sarcastic gesture around "almighty god-king"]

I can't imagine what's going through their heads. Agreeing to live in a world like this...

[Yuri shakes his head.]

Well, I'm sure we'll learn more about everyone here in time.

It does seem like we'll probably attract attention eventually. I hope we can at least hit a few of the lakes first. God knows what we're supposed to do when we get there - literally.

[only the lake gods know]

[He cracks a grin at that.]

Here's hoping our deities are benevolent gods.

It's possible.

You know, it seems like it might go faster if we split into smaller groups and went to all the lakes at once. I know Cynthia said we should stick together, but six or so is still a pretty fair amount.

I've been thinking about that too. It seems to me like sticking all together in one group would just draw more attention... But I don't like the idea of leaving any groups without any fighters. We might not be running up against monsters, but who knows what we'll encounter out there?

Not to mention, it'll be much harder to corral twenty-four people. Plenty of us are reasonable enough, but it'd be easy to lose track of someone without noticing...

[He nods about the fighter thing, though; that's a good point.]

How many fighters do we have?

Good question. I haven't spoken to everyone yet, and a lot of the people I have spoken to prefer using weapons... so it's kinda hard to judge.

We can find out the next time everyone gets together. Some of the Pokemon could be formidable as well, with a little training...I couldn't find information on all the specific species we have with us, but a lot of them get bigger and stronger as they age. There's a fish that turns into a giant sea serpent.

Whoa, really? That's pretty cool. It sounds sort of like what the Entelexeia do when they evolve.

The what, now?

Entelexeia, they're... Well, the simplest way to describe them would be "powerful talking monsters" but they're not monsters, exactly. They look more like monsters than humans, though.

Huh. What these do is called evolution, too. Maybe your world is more closely related to this one than mine, we just use the word for the thing that happens to species over millions of years.

Is it really? Huh. I'll have to check that out.

[Maybe these are like... mini Entelexeia?? Weird.]

So what have you learned about your partner?

Well, she's called a Purrloin, and eventually she'll turn into a Liepard. That's the other thing, a lot of their names are just puns. They're known for pretending to be cute and sweet so that people will let their guard down, and then stealing from them, so it's an appropriate choice on a personal level - and let me tell you, I do not like the implication that they knew that.

Purrloin— Oh, I get it. That's actually pretty clever.

[he can absolutely appreciate a good pun, good job pokéworld.]

So you think they picked these creatures out specifically for us?

I don't think you can really tell from just this one thing. But it would have been a lot easier to catch a bunch of the same common, local Pokemon for all their identical lackeys. Like we were talking about, most of ours aren't from anywhere nearby.

Yeah, that's a good point. I wonder why they didn't just do that? If they feel like they have to give us a partner, why not just make it easier on themselves and go with the simplest ones to obtain? There's gotta be a reason behind it.

I would think so. I just don't know what it is...battling? Battling who, Cynthia? There's only one of her, how many people-and-Pokemon pairs could they need?

[Because two dozen people with their level ten starters can definitely get the job done - well, no one's seen that fucking Garchomp yet]
