Week 14.

WEEK 14

Sunday is a rough day all around; it's for the best that you remain where you are for the day, for the sake of regrouping and recovering, and perhaps getting some sleep - assuming that any will come. However, as difficult though it may be (and as futile though it may seem) Monday is likely best seen as a day to depart - a day to start to take whatever actions can still be taken, and to assess where to go from here. A good place to start is Canalave City; it's where you were going to meet with Cynthia, and where you were planning on looking into the legends of Sinnoh. The city itself is beautiful, a massive port town split down the center by a large canal system filled with boats and clear water leading out to sea; however, the recent changes to the world have affected this place as well, perhaps making it a bit difficult to enjoy the city in its entirety.

However, the library is here, as are several other points of interest; as difficult though it may be to see the world like this, the trip here will hopefully be worth your while in the end...

Yeah, definitely. It's good to have people who will do their best to look after everyone. We're a pretty tight-knit group, so I think we'll be able to look out for each other fairly well.

Yeah. We'll figure ourselves out eventually.

We will. It'll be difficult for awhile, but I really don't think any of us are going to give up now.

Yeah, I know.

[He goes quiet at that, though; it's going to be fine and he knows it, it's just...not okay for right now, for whatever goddamn reason. Something he'll sort through eventually, probably.]

[He's quiet for a moment as well.]

...Don't forget that we're here for you as well. No matter how bad things get, I can't see our group splitting up. So if you're having a hard time, someone'll be there to help you back to your feet.

...You don't have to worry about me.

[He's not looking at Yuri, though.]

I don't want to have to rely on you guys, anyway. I'll be fine.

Yeah, I know you will be. Doesn't mean you can't take a moment to be upset, though.

And besides, it's a little too late for that. I'm already worried about you.

[It's said lightly, but that doesn't mean he's not serious.]

[He shrugs.]

We don't have a whole lot of time to waste on shit like that. We're going to just keep going ahead with what we were doing before all this shit happened, and we're going to pretend we're making a difference for a while until Cyrus decides he's done dicking around and comes to kill us again, and maybe he'll succeed this time. Or maybe he won't, and we'll just keep repeating this shit until he does. Same outcome.

[...That...went places, didn't it.]

Point is, we can only sit around and exchange nice words for so long before we all die. You don't have to waste that shit on me.

[He's quiet through that, though he's turned his attention to Jake again.]

Hey, we don't know that'll happen. Yeah, it's possible that he'll try to smite us down again. Maybe he'll succeed. Right now it looks like that's what'll happen. But we don't know that for sure, and none of us are going to give up easily. We'll see about meeting up with those other deities, and maybe we'll be able to stand a chance against Cyrus next time.

I know it's tough to believe things will be okay right now. But we'll figure something out, I'm sure of that.

Sometimes shit like "doing your best" and "not giving up" isn't enough, Yuri. We can't fight this and you know it.

[He kind of...laughs a bit, the sound brief and hollow.]

It's not like I'm not used this shit. Mercenaries like me... We don't get a say in how we die. That's just how it goes. This sort of shit is what happens when you let yourself think it's gonna work out for once - you get a nice reminder that God hates you and He's really gonna enjoy sending you to hell when you go. It's a pretty familiar pattern by now.

[Yuri's quiet through all that and by the time Jake's done... well, to be honest, Yuri isn't really sure how to handle that. He hesitates for a moment before he moves a bit and claps a hand to Jake's shoulder. It's a little on the rough side, and his grip is probably tighter than it really should be, but an attempt is being made, goddammit.]

I know you aren't gonna believe me right now, but things will get better. Don't think for a minute that any one of us will let you die.

Can we fight this right now? Hell no. We don't stand a damn chance. That doesn't mean things are always gonna be like this. We're going to find some allies, and we're going to figure out a plan, and then we're going to strike back and fix things here. And when we're all done with that, we'll find a way home.

You don't have to believe me right now. Just focus on moving forward. Keep walking, and who knows where you'll end up.

You're not going to die here, Jake. None of us are.

[He tenses up immediately at that hand on his shoulder; he manages to keep from just...socking Yuri on reflex (probably a good thing, since they're so damn high off the ground) but it takes him a good long moment to relax, though he doesn't try to shrug him off or anything.]

You're a fucking dumbass if you actually think we can win this.

[It's light, though. More affectionate than anything.]

But yeah, I think I can do that, at least, Like you said, not much of a choice.

[Thank you for not punching him, he probably would have fallen off and died and no one needs that.]

I don't recall ever claiming to be the brightest person here.

[He relaxes a little, though, and his grip loosens a bit. He's still not pulling away just yet.]

I don't mind reminding you if you need it. And I certainly don't mind sparring with you if you just need to shut your brain off for awhile. I'm not exactly the best at this pep talk stuff if you haven't noticed, but I'll be here for you whenever you need someone to listen. Don't go giving up on us yet, okay?

You're not that bad at it. Even if you are, people around here think I'm good at it for some reason, so you're still above our collectively shit standards.

[...This has been awkward, but it's still not "scream at this 12-year-old" levels of bad at the pep talking, Yuri, so you're probably doing fine.]

Oh, yeah, I'm dispensing all sorts of wisdom like "It's gonna be fine, hell if I know how."

Nah, I figure I'm doing okay. Somehow. It's just not something I'm great at and I know it.

Sometimes you don't need someone to be great at it. And besides, everyone's gonna react differently. So maybe "It's gonna be fine, hell if I know how" won't work on some people, but that's really all I needed to hear.

[...Yeah, he knows.]

Hey. It's good that I could help you, okay? This shit's just kind of a lot, that's all.

Definitely. I'd be really surprised if any of us was actually having an easy time of dealing with this.

[He lets go, dropping his hand back to his knee.]

I really do believe it'll be okay, though. So if there's anything I can do for you, let me know, yeah?

...Yeah, maybe.

[He probably won't, but that's more to do with him than you.]

Sorry about all of that, by the way. I'm pretty sure that's all above your pay grade.

[Joking aside, though...]

I don't mind trying to help you out, you know. You've been good to me, so I'd like to return the favor whenever I can.

[...He kind of. Pauses for a moment.]

I'm not just saying that because it's me. I don't really expect anything from anybody here, I just do stuff for them because I want to.

Maybe I don't have to, but I want to. I'm pretty fond of you, after all.

[He does try to be good to his friends! Sometimes. Sorry, Karol????]

...As long as you know you don't have to, I guess. I used to be really shitty about insisting on repayment for everything? So I'm trying to not do that kind of thing.

For what it's worth, you're doing a good job. Don't worry though, I'll be sure to keep an eye on you anyway, whether you need me to or not.
