Week 6.
WEEK 6 One thing is going to be made abundantly clear this week: the routes you're traveling are cold. Through Monday night, you'll likely find it best to skirt around the foot of that massive mountain that lies immediately to the east of Eterna City; it looks treacherous, and while some of you may be up to the trip, it's probably best to not waste your energy before you get anywhere near Lake Acuity. The journey is going to be a long one before you get there, but the first few days will see you making good time, actually. Between that and the noticeable changes to the world, maybe it won't be so bad...? ...Or not. Tuesday morning and beyond is where the hell sets in for those of you that aren't used to or don't like the cold. The routes are full of perpetual snowfall; it isn't heavy, given the time of year, but the fact of the matter is that it's still coming down, and the snow is piled up directly on the route clear up to the average person's waist. It makes traveling slow going, though if you have a fire-type it might be feasible to clear a bit more of a path - be careful with that, though, because all the runoff has to go somewhere, and it's possible that you'll just make the path icy in the end. Either way, it's cold, due to the snowfall you're going to be wet, and traveling is going to be very, very slow; here's hoping whatever's at that lake is worth it, in the end. ...Wherever the lake may actually happen to lie; no matter where you look on the way to Snowpoint City, you won't find an entrance to it... POKEMON AVAILABLE: MOUNTAINS/ELEVATED AREAS / SNOWY TERRAIN SUNDAY | MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY | FRIDAY [OOC: Welcome to week six of Azume; feel free to make as many top levels as you'd like and tag out to other characters! This post is for all of your interactions this week... at least until the weekend.] |

SUNDAY

I mean, it could be worse, given that they don't have to climb over the mountain. If anyone's going up there, that's their prerogative, but Kayneth is staying down to the more accessible to nerds trail. He does get distracted, however, when he notices something weird around midday, which... well, they're too far up for him to observe up close, but there's a bunch of Nosepass just chillin' up there.]
...ah, they are all just pointing north, aren't they. How do they get anything done?
[Anyway, when everyone sets up camp for the night, he lets his Pokemon out around his tent. He and Velasquez have both started on a project of some kind; Velasquez seems to be trying to paint something blue and blobby on a piece of paper...? It might be a self-portrait, if you turn your head and squint.
Kayneth, meanwhile, is examining his supplies to see how he can survive the frozen north. He's got a sleeping bag, aluminum foil, and cardboard, and he's pondering.]

He's turning into a little artist, isn't he.
[...That is aimed at Kayneth.]

She basically always does.
So you need someone to help you at camp? She's your girl. Or at least, she is when she isn't looking through her photos on the Sheikah Slate. It's getting full, so she needs to delete some of these... but a lot of them are sun pleasant memories...
Mmm.
But it's in the mid afternoon where Zelda is walking ahead around a cliffside and looking below it she sees ... a truly impressive sight, in her eyes. So much so that she gasps, and she takes out the Slate for a new photo regardless of her earlier concerns. There, a little further down in the valley, is an Onix. A particularly big Onix, with some scarring in it's rock body, moving at a frankly impressive speed down there before it turns to start to dig into the side of the cliff, expanding some currently existing tunnel. Either way, Zelda, ]
Oh, it's even more impressive in person! That's an Onix, have you seen one yet? I saw it noted in the field guide I'd been studying before we set out...! I'd been wanting to see one!
[ She seems to be pretty into it? Either way, she's excitedly going to address you about that giant rock snake down there. ]
Camp
Excuse me. I borrowed this from the Eterna gym, and I thought you would find this useful.
[...]
I'll give them back to Gardenia once everything's okay again, but for now, we'll find these some use. It's her research about Grass-type Pokemon.

oh, but Zelda's just so excited, so here Emmeryn comes to see what's going on, Duma plodding along beside her and her Nidoran in her arms. To be fair, that is an impressive giant rock monster.]
What a marvelous creature—I cannot say I've seen anything like it. Oh, a portrait may not compare, but perhaps you could make one before it leaves.

Jake isn't going up, despite the fact that he's sorely tempted to; he'll stick to the lower trails - even though he feels that up and over would probably cut down on time in theory, it would probably just prolong the trip in practice the second somebody breaks their damn ankle. So. Skirting the mountain base it is, but he's definitely making note of the fact that it's damn huge.
He didn't get anything particularly useful from Cynthia, but what he did get seems to have amused him on some private level; during the usual break around midday he can be seen sitting on the ground like the man of taste and culture he is, Hlača plunked down in his lap playing around with what looks distinctly like a fucking fifty-dollar bill (USD). The Scraggy doesn't seem too interested in ripping it up, he's just kind of tugging at it between his hands like it's the most fascinating thing he's ever seen and once in a while he tries folding it, seeming weirdly pleased at how easily it wraps around itself.]
So, I didn't get to ask before we left, but what do you think the exchange rate looks like here?
[He doesn't sound like he's serious; it's light, he seems pretty relaxed all things considered.
That said, he can be found at camp that night, set up and just...sitting near whatever we've all got that's passing for a fire; he's got one of the scarves Zelda made on, and he's got that cube he got the first week out with him as well. Once in a while he'll manipulate it between his hands, flipping it open to get to the softly-glowing blue display, before flipping it closed again; as usual, he likely has something on his mind, though it's hard to say exactly what.]

So far, the terrain is easy enough as long as you avoid the literal enormous mountain, so he's been focusing on training his Pokemon. As it happens, he seems to have discovered a new technique. You may find him frowning at a rare wild Chansey, Quaver sitting on the ground a little ways in front of them. The Chansey appears to have produced an egg to eat.]
...okay, mimic that.
[Quaver used Mirror Move! Quaver used Softboiled!
Quaver...has made an egg appear? He didn't lay it, it's just sort of here now. He tilts his head at it, and then starts to crack the shell with his beak.
It's softboiled. Michael lifts his hands.]

That doesn't seem to matter once Sena starts having Monta burn a clear path through the snow early in the morning, although...]
M...Monta...You don't need to zig-zag while doing that...
[The paths are...very inconvenient, to say the least. They also fish out a lot of wild Pokemon, who actually retaliate against Monta burning them out of their hiding spots underneath the snow. Needless to say, Sena gets in quite a lot of battle practice that morning, eventually developing a system of having Vee and Nin back Monta up so he can focus on burning paths in the snow.
Later in the afternoon, however, things get a little...out of hand. Because Monta learned how to use Flame Wheel instead of Ember, and while it's definitely a much faster way to burn through the snow, Monta's exuberance means it's also...]

Because Rey has spent the vast majority of her life living in the desert, and is taking to the snow, ice and bitter cold about as well as you'd expect. The only other time in her life where snow had been involved, she'd been so high on adrenaline that feeling the cold had been the least of her worries. Now, however, every laboured step through the endless mass of white is sending a chill through her body.]
H-How much l-l-longer do...do w-we have to walk in this.....
[That's more to herself than anyone within listening range - throughout the day, you'll mainly just see her staggering along, bundled up in so many layers that it's hard to ascertain how she's actually managing to walk. Occassionaly, she'll mutter out one phrase or another, the words inaudible over the sound of her teeth chattering.
In the evening, she's huddled by the fire, eating some of her packaged food in-between warming her various extremities. Beside her, Golett is also munching away - admittedly looking somewhat less bothered by the temperature.]

Again.
She’s going to die in pants, at least, she’s finally gotten that sensible, even if her coat is way too nice for hiking in (her outfit in general is, but that's about usual), but jesus fucking christ is it legal for the weather to do this? Is this allowed? Ylisse is so temperate all the time, Regna Ferox doesn’t even snow this hard most of the time, what the fuck. She misses the dirt. She even kinda misses the cliffs. That was a simpler time. Simpler ways to get your ass killed by or with the elements.
She starts the morning with Duma at her side as usual, and her Nidoran all wrapped up in a scarf and the sling Emmeryn used to carry her egg, but that lasts like twenty goddamn minutes before Duma remembers that he’s weak to ice-types and the hike stops being fun for him. He spends a short while squawking in complaint, and, before Emmeryn gets the chance to try remedying the situation, he tries to headbutt a snowbank and just drops straight down through it and starts wailing.]
Oh, no—Hold on, love…
[Unfortunately, Bagon weigh like a hundred pounds, and Emmeryn has a STR stat of one, so she's stuck trying to dig her poor dragonsaur out of the snow while he whines and flails like this is the end of the world and refuses to cooperate or help in the slightest.
So needless to say, despite that Emmeryn has kept her team of two out at her side from the very first day here, once this situation gets resolved, everyone goes right back in their goddamn Pokéball.
Regardless, even without her usual companions, Emmeryn makes it throughout the day’s march without complaint, mmmaybe in part because she is absolutely fucking freezing and getting her teeth to quit chattering long enough to talk is a trial. It doesn’t keep her from giving everyone as friendly a greeting as ever when they're nearby, buuut she's marginally harder to get a hold of than usual while she's lagging behind some...
Come evening and time to camp, Emmeryn sits both her Pokémon in her lap and bundles them each up tight in her extra blankets and scarves, which she could probably be using for herself, especially considering that every now and again she has to pause to sneeze daintily into her arm.
She’s gonna die here.
Duma makes one of his weird squawking noises, scrunches his face up, and blows one little flame out of his mouth, keeping it small and steady.]
...That would have been very helpful when you were still stuck in the snow, darling.
[Still, her whole expression warms, and Duma seems quite content, too, as Emmeryn pats his head.]

Later on, when he's basically half-mad from cold and exhaustion, he finally spots his quarry. Instead of taking it rationally and calmly, he points at the small, brown creature in the snow:]
Found you!
[...and instead of sending out his Pokemon, he just kind of flails through the snow towards the creature, who... just kind of freezes in fear at this strange, horrible human coming towards it and picking it up and lifting it over his head??? It kind of squeals helplessly as Kayneth just kind of laughs triumphantly over finally finding his Ground-type, who will eventually be able to carry his backpack for him and who he can name something extremely petty.
So that's why Kayneth has a mildly flummoxed looking Swinub with him when he's huddled up by the campfire, very... very tired from the events of the day and covered in every blanket he owns. He's kind of nodding off with his Murkrow huddled in the front of his jacket, as that's the only Pokemon he has that's warm-blooded and not slightly terrified of him at the moment....]

... Namely, like any good Hyrulian, eating Spicy food. ]
Here, have a Tamato Berry.
[ It looks a little bit like a Tomato! ... Though it's also dry and spicy and honestly probably feels like it burns your lips? But for Zelda, it seems like the natural way to be ready to march through the snow! Actually...
In the afternoon, she's actually making a Tamato stew so that she can put them into these containers for soup she's found around in the cities (she found thermos) and allow people to drink it to warm themselves up? She's cutting it with mushrooms and such, but as she tries it, while she does yelp at how hot it is, it still doesn't taste good... Hmmm. Actually, she decides to test it on her Pokemon. Miphanus tries it and and it seems... okay with it? Saber tries it and while she does lap up the soup, the minute that she finishes it... she actually looks ill. Like she really, really hated it and didn't realize it until she finished it. ... Uh. Are you okay, girl? But her as yet unnamed Geodude actually loves this. So he'll be drinking it as if from a sake cup with her little sampling dish? She needed to get her ladle back... But yes, come across this soup if you want, it's probably got a pronounced spicy smell to it.
But then in the evening, as if to wash off her tongue, Saber sets out into the wilds. She licks around at the ground, at the snow. But- ... Zelda has to go and find her, and when she does. ... Her tongue is stuck to a rock. ... Why is her tongue stuck to a rock, is it the cold. ]

Michael understood the concept. There's areas of the Bad Place that are kept cold. He's been there - never for a significant amount of time, true, but he feels that it's more than prepared him to deal with the weather here! After all, humans build Snowpoint Town that far north deliberately. Why would they do that somewhere that was particularly harsh?
Now, he's huddled up on himself along the road, all of his Pokemon returned to their balls. You may hear him faintly wailing to himself the first time the wind really kicks up.]
Why do humans live like this? You could live anywhere!
[That evening, all three of his Pokemon are out, huddled up around him for warmth by the fire. He's still rubbing his hands together to try to coax some heat back into them, staring into the flames.]
Humanity is a nightmare.

Jake has been letting his Pokémon out at night if they prefer it - Naočale doesn't seem to give a fuck one way or another, and seeing as Jake doesn't want his lizards to die to cold or something he's been keeping him in the ball if he's not going to care; Hlača has been aggressively wanting to stay near him, though, and even Lobanja's stoic ass has been seeming a lot more lively lately (and besides, she breathes fire) so he's been keeping them nearby. And now it's morning, and Hlača doesn't want to go back in the ball, and he keeps headbutting Jake every time he tries and he's really, really not feeling up to getting kneecapped by the pantslizard's face, so after a ten-minute standoff he'll pick the Scraggy up (as always, carrying him around on his damn hip like he's an errant toddler) though it isn't long before he just kind of...puts him down again and lets the damn thing walk for a while.
Because he's not feeling up to getting kneecapped, but he's also not feeling up to a lot of things; he's seeming weirdly blank and listless today, his eyes weird and glassy. Almost like exhaustion, but not quite. Tinged with something else, maybe. Either way, this morning is going to be a mess.
At least Hlača doesn't stray too far, though once in a while he'll go pick a fight with the Pokémon hiding in the snowdrifts; Jake is pretty content to just watch this in the same weird, listless sort of manner until Hlača decides to get directly in the face of one of those weird...catweasel-things.
The Sneasel gives not a single fuck about Hlača, and that is apparently a crime that canno go unpunished.]
Hlača, that goddamn cat is going to kick your ass-
[That's about all he manages before the throwdown starts, and it's kind of absurdly one-sided; Hlača emerges victorious after showing that Fighting-types beat the unholy hell out of a Dark/Ice combo before just kind of looking at Jake for approval.
Jake just. stares for a moment.]
...Okay, then.
[...He's going to capture that catweasel. It got its ass handed to it, but look at it, the damn thing is cool, even if Hlača seems pretty unimpressed with Jake's taste.
Jake will generally seem pretty out of it during the day, though he's keeping up well enough - he's tired but he's still here, he's not falling behind. By the time camp happens that evening, however, he can be found reasonably near the fire, sitting curled up tightly under a blanket with his head resting on his knees, Hlača and Lobanja at his sides. He doesn't seem like he's particularly here for conversation, but he won't stop you if you try it, either; it's hopefully just sort of a Day, though if anyone looks long enough it's probably fairly evident that he's shaking a bit.]

At least until one of Monta's fireballs looks a lot more...glowy than usual, and bigger. A little too big, actually.]
Yeee-! M-Monta! Hold on, cut it-
[Before Sena can get further, though, the fireball dissipates, bursting apart in a small explosion. When Sena can finally blink through the bursts of light flashing in his vision, he can finally see that Monta is unharmed...but, uh...bigger.]
M-M-Monta?!
Monnnn-fyyaa!!
[The larger monkey pumps his fist. Yep. That sure is Monta.
Later in the evening, after Sena gets Monta to clear out a space to camp in the snow, Vee finally gets a chance to properly look the new Monferno up and down. And seems confused about something - the smaller monkey went into the fireball and a bigger monkey came out. She doesn't get it.
So she chitters out a question that's something along the lines of okay, so where did Monta go? Which Monta accepts with much good grace, by which I mean no grace at all.]
"I AM Monta!" "no you're not" "eXCUSE ME I AM" "no? anyways when is monta coming back?"
[And so on.
Sena doesn't really notice what's going on until he comes back from setting up a small tent and finds Vee biting Monta's hand while the Monferno flails around angrily.]
G-Guys, stop! [Time to pull Vee away, oh god is the revenge instinct finally kicking in, he's so sorry, sorry, sorry, yiiiiikeees.
(where is Nin during all this? She's playing it smart and staying out of things by remaining at her usual post on Sena's back. Not getting involved today, nope.]

He's up early this morning with a fire set for everyone to warm up with as they prepare for another day of misery. For some of the time he occupies the fire with a kettle to boil water and make some coffee. It's nothing fancy since he's just steeping the kettle with a makeshift coffee bag, but he couldn't be bothered to fill up valuable space in his pack with a coffee maker. Besides, at this point it's less about fancy coffee and more about just having some kind of pick-me-up to get through the exhaustion of travel and lack of decent sleep in these weather conditions.
Those who approach seeking a cup of their own will get this response from Eustace:]
If you want some, you're going to need to bring your own cup.
[He only packed one for himself...
On the road, Eustace is at the front of the pack, assisting efforts to plow snow out of the way and making sure none of the melted snow freezes on particularly steep inclines. The last thing they need in the middle of this is an injury that could have been prevented.
He hasn't voiced much of an opinion about the rough travel unless asked, but as the day wears on and he begins to slow down a bit, it's pretty obvious that he's just as cold and tired of all this as everyone else. Though maybe he wouldn't be as cold if he hadn't chosen to wear a backless top under his open coat. The sacrifices of keeping comfortable, apparently. At least Pup looks warm enough with his fluffy little doggy coat, though he probably couldn't care less if he was warm or cold. He's listlessly trotting alongside Eustace for a good chunk of the day, battling when the opportunity arises.
Dinner...proves to be an Experience with Rose. Upon releasing the Mimikyu from her Pokeball to feed her, he's met with otherworldly shrieking and Rose fleeing into the darkness.]
Rose--!
[Exasperated by the chaos, Eustace goes looking with Pup for the frightened Pokemon. They return not long after, as Rose hadn't gone far. But the closer Eustace carries Rose toward the fire, the more apprehensive she gets.]
...why are you afraid of fire all of the sudden?
[It's a strange development, and even if Rose has some cover from her costume and scarf, he's concerned that she won't be able to keep warm enough while she's out of her ball. Plus, he's pretty sure he's going to lose his cool if she keeps whimpering like this.
Eventually, they reach a compromise. Eustace sips at his cup of soup facing away from the fire, and Rose has her own dinner while bundled up in his lap, keeping warm but shielded from what she now apparently considers immediate danger. Pup, still without a care in the world, curls up beside the two to munch on whatever Eustace gave him.
After another long day, hopefully relief is around the corner.]

... Here. Come sit with me.
[He gestures for the Eevee to sit: she can take the rock if she wants, he doesn't mind sitting in the snow if he has to. After a moment of staring, the Eevee comes forth, and makes to hop up onto the rock...
... Except, the moment that Eevee comes in contact with the rock, Ari's Pokemon suddenly starts glowing brightly, causing Ari to stumble back in shock. Once the light clears... ta-da, who's that Pokemon that Marlene has become now? It's Glaceon, a Pokemon that is now much more comfortable with the ice and snow as it sits here, queen of the ice rock. It's a long moment before Ari is able to speak.]
Um... congratulations?
[Is that the appropriate thing to say here? Is this what it's like to have one of your Pokemon evolve?
Later, when it comes time to stop and eat, Ari finds himself watching other people eat and prepare things for a long while before he suddenly asks--]
Do you think someone could learn about cooking here?

Investigation-ish
But then, in the afternoon, that's when the real shenanigans happen. Investigating pretty afield with Miphanus at her side, about three things happen at once. The first is that that scared and somewhat overly large Onix she saw several days ago now lies before here, titanic now that she's seeing the thing up close, towering over her and the Beldum. She gasps a little at it, particularly when it makes a half-hearted roar of challenge. Thinking it's for them, Zelda does get on the defensive... Right up until it's clear the battle is between it and a tiny black thing with a pink feather in front of it, also looking a little dazed, but responding to the roar with a little chirp.
Yes, Zelda ha walked into a battle of wild giant ass Onix vs wild small-ish Sneasel, and she's unsure where her and Miphanus are supposed to stand on it? Maybe you're around too, to see this insanity?
However, whatever the outcome might come from that, it's in the evening back at camp with Miphanus floating behind her as usual that anyone who didn't witness whatever happened with that battle will be in for a surprise? Namely, that Miphanus is bigger now, more complex. Namely, out in the wilds before she returned here, Miphanus has evolved. What was once an arm with one eye is now a creature with two eyes and two arms.
